Millions of people will someday experience the woes of chronic snoring, whether they themselves are creating this irksome sound or whether their sleep is disrupted by their partner. While there are many superficial issues that can cause snoring, it can also be indicative of a more serious health issue.

Read on to find out more about this common affliction.

If you want to stop snoring, don’t drink that glass of warm (or cold) milk at bedtime. Dairy beverages can make your nose generate more mucus, which will block your air passages — which will cause you to snore. Drinking water instead will keep your nose from blocking, and will keep you from snoring.

Not eating a large meal close to bedtime is one of the best ways to prevent snoring. When your stomach is too full, it can makes it’s way up to your diaphragm, thus, limiting your breathing and causing snoring. Stick with big meals at dinnertime and have a light snack instead before bed.

Discuss your snoring with your dentist. If your lower jaw slackens in your sleep, it can contribute to snoring. Your dentist can fit you with a special mouthguard to wear at night, which will hold your teeth together and keep your jaw relaxing too much. This may fix your snoring problems.

Tape your nose using specialized strips. Snoring is not only a problem in regard to your health, it can impact the health of loved ones. When you are snoring so loudly that those near you can get any sleep, it is a problem for everyone. Consider using un-medicated nasal strips to help control your snoring.

Consult your physician if you snore on a regular basis, because you may be suffering from a sleep disorder called sleep apnea. People with this disorder actually stop breathing for a period of time while sleeping and may wake up briefly in order to resume breathing. This can result in daytime fatigue. Sleep apnea can be treated, so it is important to receive medical intervention.

You may want to look into magnetic therapy in order to end snoring. With this method, a plastic ring with two magnetic ends attach to your nose when you go to sleep. The ring helps to stimulate the sensors that open the nasal passages, thus, preventing a person from snoring.

Sleep on your side to minimize your chances of snoring. If you sleep on your back, your tongue may fall back into your throat and obstruct the airways. This can result in snoring. Sleeping on your side keeps the tongue from falling back into the throat, so you are less likely to snore.

Losing weight is a great way to reduce how much you snore. Extra body fat in the neck increases the pressure on your throat and windpipe. The extra pressure can cause your airway to slightly collapse throughout the night. Just a couple pounds can make a big difference in your breathing and cut way back on snoring.

It’s an oldie but a goody. If you snore more profoundly when you are lying on your back, put a ball, or other large object in the back of your t-shirt while sleeping. This way if you attempt to roll on your back in your sleep, this little uncomfortable reminder will quickly having you back on your side.

If you find that you are always sleeping with your mouth open, try keeping your mouth closed throughout the night. This will make it much easier for you to not only take in oxygen, but retain it as well. Sleep with your mouth closed to diminish snoring when you rest at night.

You can encourage bilateral sleeping positions throughout the night with this simple trick. Before you get in bed, pin the tennis ball onto the back side of your pajamas. As you’re sleeping, you end up turning on your side as you feel the ball placed on your back. If you sleep on your side, you will notice a significant reduction in your snoring.

To minimize snoring, try to eat a large breakfast and lunch during the day. This will force you to have a smaller dinner, which is very beneficial towards maintaining a high comfort level when you sleep at night. The more comfortable you are when you rest, the less of a chance for you to snore.

Take a good hot shower before going to bed. Not only will it relax you and help you get to sleep, the steam from the shower will moisturize and open your respiratory passages. When you are dry inside you are more likely to snore. The steam will remedy that problem.

Now you should have a better understanding of why you and others snore. The internet is full of advice on this common issue, but not all of it is sound.

Consider the above advice carefully whenever you endeavor to solve a snoring problem. If all else fails, consult your doctor for a second opinion.

If snoring is a constant nightly battle for you, you may want to consider purchasing a humidifier to add moisture back into the air and relieve the dryness in your throat, making it easier to breathe. A simple technique would be to simply run hot water and hold your face over the faucet to inhale the steam, shortly before going to sleep. This will open up your airways and also, moisturize your throat and nasal cavities.

Smokers who wish to get rid of their snoring habit should strongly consider quitting. At the very least, they should try and reduce the amount they smoke each day. Smoking causes inflammation in the throat and lungs, which are big contributors to snoring, so getting rid of smoking will allow you to breath a lot easier.
