Plumbing Tips That Are A Big Help When You Really Need It

Plumbing problems can always pop up. Plumbing issues can range in difficulty, from easy to hard. No matter what the problem is with your plumbing, you should be educated so when there is an emergency, you can act quickly to get the problem fixed.

Make sure you know where your home’s water shutoff is located. You never know when there might be an emergency involving a broken pipe or damaged connection that requires you to turn off the water right away. In addition, knowing where the shutoff is located is vital before you start any plumbing project, in case anything goes wrong.

If you have noisy pipes, you can cushion them with a rubber blanket or add additional anchor straps. Banging pipes are usually caused by loose pipes, water hammering to a stop as you turn it off, or hot water pipes shifting in their position. All of these problems can be solved by cushioning and anchoring the pipes.

If you have issues with the plumbing making a hammering sound when you turn it off, check your water pressure. Any time your water pressure is above 80 PSI, you will hear extra water noise. This can be easily solved by the installation of a pressure-reducing valve, which can be done by most homeowners.

You should drain all of the water out of the tank of your hot water heater at least once every three to six months. Draining all of the water out of the tank helps to prevent sediment build-up at the bottom of the tank. This sediment can cause the tank to bang or to heat less efficiently.

Don’t throw trash down your toilet. Doing so can clog the drain and cause plumbing problems. A lot of commonly-flushed items such as tissues, cotton balls and swabs, paper towels, diapers, and sanitary napkins can clog up a toilet by failing to dissolve properly. In addition, you should only use the amount of toilet paper that is absolutely necessary when cleaning yourself.

In the winter months, if you live somewhere where temperatures fall below freezing, leave your faucets on a little bit to let a thin stream of water through. This will help prevent the pipes from freezing, which could be a major problem for you and all the pipes in your home.

Be sure to check that your faucets on the outside of your home are free of leaks as winter approaches. You will have to fix this potential problem before freezing temperatures come. Freezing water can cause pressure to build up, causing your pipes to crack, or burst, regardless if your pipes are constructed with steel, plastic, or metal. Even a very small crack can cause significant water damage or even can flood your entire home.

The most important plumbing tip you need to know is — how to turn off your home’s main water supply. Once the water is shut off, you can investigate problems and figure out how to resolve them. Walk the family through the house and show them where all the water shut-off valves are, and how to use them.

Teach kids how to shut off the toilet’s water supply. Kids are notorious for putting large wads of toilet paper and other things into the toilet, which inevitably leads to the toilet overflowing. Especially if your bathroom has carpet, show kids how to turn the water valve off if the toilet water keeps rising, to prevent the mess of an overflow.

When you are going to do laundry in your home washing machine, do not use excess detergent, bleach or other chemicals. Too many of these products can cause the natural bacteria in your septic system to be killed. Just use enough of these products in order to get your laundry done.

When trying to unclog drains, never use any chemical drain openers. Even though these products may help to open up your drain, the chemicals in them can cause damage to your body, especially if they get on your skin. And if you must use a chemical cleaner, make sure you always protect your skin by wearing gloves and a proper long-sleeved shirt.

If you are the kind of person who likes to listen to music when you work, then you should be sure to avoid using headphones. A radio is a much smarter choice, as it will allow you to hear the music you want, without distracting you from hearing important sounds.

Tank-less water heaters are a great space saving alternative to traditional tank units. They are available in many models, some for indoors and some models are capable for outdoor mounting. Tank-less water heaters are known as great money savers when it comes to your water bill.

Like this article said, there are a lot of things that can happen to your plumbing. These issues can be small, or they can be big. Use the tips in the article above to deal with plumbing issues with less stress and confusion.

If there is grout stuck in your line, it is most likely going to be a lost cause attempting to clean it all yourself. You can break up the grout and send it further down. It works better if you have plastic pipes instead of metal pipes. However, ultimately it usually requires a professional to rid you of this problem.

Do not use the liquid cleaning supplies that are designed to clear clogs. These cleaners are harmful and can damage your pipes as they clear the clog. Instead of using damaging liquids, use a plunger or a plumbing snake. These are much more effective and will not harm pipes.

Get rid of odors in your waste-disposal unit. In many cases’ odors in your waste-disposal unit may not be a sign of a clog, but simply small food particles that have started to rot. Place a combination of lemon peel and ice cubes in the unit, and run it for about a minute. Follow this with a good amount of cold water. If this doesn’t help, try a degrease or specialized waste disposal cleaner.
