Learn about different types of yoga

2019-06-17 Health No comment

Yoga is becoming an increasingly popular activity in the Western world today. The number of places where yoga classes are held is increasing and there are many different types of yoga. You can choose Hatha Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Power Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, Bikram Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga, etc. It is easy to confuse

This article will help you understand the differences between the most popular types of yoga so that you can choose the type that suits you.

Hatha Yoga – "Ha" in Sanskrit [the ancient classical language of India] means "the sun" and "tha" means "the moon." This type of yoga is a reliable slow-paced, gentle type of yoga. If you are a newcomer to yoga and don't know any poses [postures], this is a good starting point. Like all types of yoga, Hatha Yoga aims to unite mind, body and spirit.

Ashtanga Yoga – This is the type of yoga I practice regularly, meaning "eight limbs" in Sanskrit. It is a fast-moving, intense yoga practice style based on a progressive sequence of poses that is synchronized with breathing. Ashtanga Yoga is very demanding on the body because you constantly move from one pose to another, so you will find it will increase your stamina and your flexibility and strength.

Power Yoga – This is a Western interpretation of yoga, based on Ashtanga Yoga. A power yoga class may not necessarily adhere to the exact sequence of postures like Ashtanga Yoga, but it does involve practicing a series of poses without stopping and starting.

Iyengar Yoga – This type of yoga is based on the teachings of BKS Igengar and focuses on the correct body alignment and form. Unlike Ashtanga Yoga, the focus is on maintaining each position for a long time, not from one position to the next. Iyengar Yoga uses items such as blocks and straps to help the body align with different postures.

Vinyasa Yoga – Vinyasa means breathing synchronized movement, another fast-paced yoga type with a focus on breathing. Exercises usually start with a tribute from the sun and then stretch more strongly. Each pose is balanced with the counter pose throughout the exercise.

Bikram Yoga – also known as "hot yoga", is carried out in a room heated to 105 degrees with a humidity of about 40%. The sequence of 26 different postures is usually practiced in the Bikram Yoga class, and high temperatures help to relax the muscles. Due to the high temperatures, most people sweat a lot in the classroom, which helps to cleanse the body's toxins.

If you have just started or never done any yoga, I suggest trying some different types of yoga to find out what you like best.

Remember, there are no rules that say you must stick to one type of yoga. I like Ashtanga yoga the most, but I also occasionally take Iyengar and Hatha yoga classes.
