Those who have insomnia or are closely connected to someone who does know all too well the agony it can cause. Getting enough sleep each and every night need not be a mysterious or elusive process, however. By reviewing the information presented below, anyone can have the tools they need to be fully rested at all times.

Talk with your doctor if you are experiencing insomnia. While insomnia may just be cause by things like stress and anxiety, it can also be a symptom of certain physical disorders. Don’t self diagnose. Speak with your general practitioner immediately. The doctor will be able to tell you what the cause is and give you the proper treatment.

When your insomnia is getting the best of you, try a cup of warm milk. Although many people think this is just an old wives tale, there’s really some science behind it. Warm milk actually soothes your nervous system, making sleep come more easily. Just pop a mug in the microwave for a minute or so and sleep should soon follow.

The television and computer should be turned off prior to your scheduled sleep time. These devices tend to be stimulating. Turn these off earlier so you can focus on relaxing and falling asleep. Turn off all electronic devices at a certain time each night.

Try not to take naps. Napping can interrupt the normal sleep schedule, making it harder to fall asleep at bedtime. Try to associate sleep with darkness and relaxation. You will be more likely to fall asleep easily if you are tired from being awake all day, instead of feeling refreshed from an earlier nap.

If you find yourself in a constant struggle with insomnia, check your clocks. Are they bothering you as you try to sleep? Don’t use clocks that tick loudly or that have illuminated numbers, as both can be disruptive to sleep.

If you are having trouble falling asleep, try rubbing your feet. If you have someone there who can rub your feet for you, that’s even better. When the pressure points in your feet are massaged, your whole body will relax. With a relaxed body, you will have a relaxed mind as well and be able to fall asleep.

Take some time in the early evening to put the day’s worries away. Write down any stresses, or tasks that were left undone, and plan to do them tomorrow. If things you have to do the following day are keeping you up, make a solid plan, or even a schedule, so that you do not have to linger over these thoughts while you are trying to sleep.

If you have trouble falling asleep on a regular basis, try to boost your melatonin levels. Tart cherry juice has been found to have high levels of melatonin. This can be found in natural or health food stores. A small amount a half an hour before bedtime can really help you fall asleep and stay asleep.

When you lay down, do you get a stuffy or runny nose? Locate the source. You may find it is allergy based and an antihistamine will treat this. Antihistamines serve a dual purpose of also making you sleepy. You might also replace your pillows or use an air filter.

If you have a willing spouse, or sleep partner, try talking him or her into giving you a relaxing massage to help combat insomnia. If you cannot coerce them into a full-body massage, even a quick back massage with some soothing oil might be enough to relax your body, making sleep come easier.

Avoid eating or drinking things that have caffeine in them when it is close to bedtime. To be on the safe side, you should do them no less than six hours before. Caffeine is a stimulant and it will keep you up for far longer than you would like, so drink decaffeinated versions of your favorites as bedtime approaches.

If your insomnia persists or you find it is affecting you physically or mentally, then consult your doctor. You may have an underlying problem such as sleep apnea which needs to be treated. Even if you don’t have a serious medical problem, it should help you to know that everything is OK.

Control the temperature of your sleeping environment. Studies have shown that rooms that are too warm can actually interrupt sleep. Set your thermostat to a cool 68 degrees and use a fan to circulate the air. You will be able to breathe better and should sleep for several more hours straight.

It is indisputable that insomnia has the power to completely disrupt the lives of those it plagues. The happy truth, however, is that remedies and treatments are available that can provide the answers insomniacs everywhere desperately want to have. We hope the resources discussed above prove valuable to everyone who reads them.

To help get to sleep at night, do not turn on the television when you get into bed. Give your brain a rest from electronic stimulation, and look at a book or meditate quietly instead. That down time from electronics makes it easier to get into a sound sleep period.

Make a schedule and stick too it. Do not stay up to watch a special show, or sleep in because you have the day off. Maintaining a sleep schedule trains your body and mind to fall asleep on time. It also helps you stay asleep longer during the night.

Wake at the same time consistently every day. That might seem strange if you want to sleep in whenever you’re able to catch a bit of sleep, but if you can get yourself use a regular waking schedule, you’ll save up all that sleepiness and it will be easier to go to sleep during the night.
